Community Lounge

[Parent Workshop] Early Literacy Skills

The Community Lounge is a monthly workshop series designed to inform parents about school related topics and to connect families with the community resources. We typically hold five workshops each year, and the very first one for this school year will take place on Monday, January 11th, 2021.

--

Topic of the Month: "Raising Readers: How to Support your Child’s Literacy Development at Home"

This seminar will cover the five major areas of reading: Phonemic Awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary, Fluency, and Comprehension. Students in lower elementary school need to be proficient in all areas to be successful in their reading. For each area, we will look at some simple activities that families can do together at home, using online as well as non-screen tools. Parents will receive descriptions of activities and hands-on learning tools to use with their children and a list of websites and resources.

Date: Monday, January 11, 2021
Time: 5 PM - 6 PM
Speaker: Dr. Briana Hunt, Private Reading Specialist K-12
Main target audience: Parents of grades 1-3, but all are welcome.

We will meet virtually – a Zoom link will be sent to those who sign up.
